Breast cancer striking younger Chinese

A WOMAN’S reproductive history, the way she feeds her baby, the age of having the first child, life habits and stress are all major factors for the surge in breast cancer cases in the country.
The numbers have been rising quickly among young Chinese and middle-aged women, local medical experts told a breast cancer education and prevention event in Shanghai yesterday.
There are more breast cancer patients in China who are less than 40 years old than in western countries.
Shanghai Tumor Hospital recently carried out a two-year research on 582 breast cancer patients and 540 women with benign breast diseases, aged 40 or younger to study the causes of the alarming rise of breast cancer cases in the city.
Family history, delays in having children, avoiding breastfeeding, exposure to passive smoking and stress from work and life all contributed to the growth of breast cancer.
The high consumption of animal oil is also a cause for breast cancer, the research found.
According to the research, young women with direct family member having breast cancer are 2.4 times at a higher risk of getting the cancer, while women who did not have children are also at a big risk.
Women who have children at an early age are at a lower risk, the study found.
“Breast is an organ that is extremely sensitive to hormones. A women’s hormone secretion is closely related with their physical and mental status.
“The research also found that long-term negative moods can also lead to breast cancer,” said Dr Yu Ke from Shanghai Tumor Hospital’s department of breast surgery.
