Breast cancer incidence is rising by 2-3% annually in China's big cities

THE incidence of breast cancer is rising by 2 to 3 percent among residents in China’s big cities and more economically developed provinces, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Taiwan, medical experts told a Shanghai-Taipei Health Forum yesterday.

Dr Wu Jiong, vice president of Shanghai Cancer Center, said breast cancer is rising by 3.3 percent in Taiwan annually, while the growth speed of the top female cancer is 2 percent in Beijing and 3 percent in Shanghai as well.

“We recorded only 200 breast cancer cases in 1994 at our facility, while we carried out over 4,400 breast cancer surgeries in the first 11 months this year,” Wu said.

“Women’s regular self-check, regular screening and genetic check in those with family history are necessary for early identification of breast cancer.”

Experts said ultrasound check and x-ray check are useful for young women, while those with highly risky genetic mutation
