Boy critical after spike pierces brain

A 5-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after receiving surgery yesterday to remove a 45-centimeter-long steel bar from his brain.
Doctors at the Shanghai No. 10 People’s Hospital successfully removed the metal rod but said the youngster would remain in intensive care for several days.
“The first three days are critical due to the risk of infection,” chief surgeon Dr Gao Liang said.
“We can’t say how well the boy will recover, but we know his brain has been damaged.”
The boy was playing at a construction site in his hometown of Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, when the steel bar fell from above and pierced his skull.
“About 15cm of the bar entered the boy’s brain, leaving about 30cm protruding through his head,” Gao said.
The surgeon’s team took three hours to remove the bar, but described the procedure as going “smoothly.”
