Birth defects in spotlight

CONGENITAL deformity has become a major cause of death among infants in China and seriously raises the country’s social burden, the national health authority said yesterday.

The announcement marked the launch of a nationwide campaign to tackle the problem of birth defects, which are responsible for about 20 percent of all infant fatalities in China.

According to recent figures, the incidence of congenital deformity last year in Shanghai was 97.5 in every 10,000 newborns, down from 117 in 2012 and 105 in 2011.

The Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said the improvements are due to a new four-point checking system, which includes monitoring of mothers-to-be and screening of newborns.

Nationwide, however, the incidence of congenital deformity is on the rise, from 110 cases per 10,000 newborns in 2000 to 153 in 2011.
