Average age of female breast cancer patients rises to 57
THE average age of female patients with breast cancer in the city has gone up to 57 years in 2013, according to a study conducted by the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
It was 54 years in 1973.
Officials said there is a misconception among people that more young people are getting breast cancer than older people in Shanghai.
The center said the incidence of breast cancer among women over 40 years old is the highest in the past 40 years.
According to the study, women between 50 and 59 years old were in the highest- risk group, nearly 23 percent higher than those who were between 40 and 49.
The 30-39 age group showed a 3 percent annual decrease in the incidence of breast cancer rates since 1995. The incidence rate for the 20-29 age group remained unchanged.
Considering the city’s aging population factor, the standardized incidence rate of breast cancer among Shanghai women is 17 percent lower than world average and half that in developed countries.
Although most cancers are known to be hereditary, about 70 to 80 percent of female patients with breast cancer didn’t have a family history of the disease.
Age, heredity, early menarche and late menopause are widely acknowledged as the main causes of breast cancer.
Smoking, obesity, late and not having children, improper intake of estrogen from drugs and health products are believed to cause breast cancer.
The center also found higher incidences of thyroid cancer among local women with more than 100 deaths every year.
