Art helps children in hospital

A charity program teaching children in hospital about art and culture is exploring the effects of music and art for their treatment and recovery.

The program was launched in Shanghai Children’s Medical Center yesterday. The hospital said it had cooperated with a local charity organization to give children courses on natural sciences, arts, innovation and music, with the aim of relieving children’s anxiety and benefiting their treatment.

“Hospitalization is a tough period of time for children and researches found 80 percent of hospitalized children will have negative behavior and 54 percent will suffer emotional problems like depression, nightmares and fear after staying for over two weeks,” said Dr Jiang Fan, an official from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. “Art is a good way to help them,” he added.

The program is now recruiting organizations and volunteers who can help. Those interested can apply on WeChat public account rsdbt2011 or call the hotline 17701690960, hospital officials said.

Also yesterday, the nation’s first training program to promote education and adoption of “flow cytometry” in clinical practice of pediatrics was launched at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University to boost Chinese doctors’ ability on child congenital immunity disease diagnosis and treatment.

Flow cytometry is an biophysical technology used in cell counting, cell sorting, biomarker detection and protein engineering for diagnosis of immunity function, leukemia, blood diseases and other cancers.
