AEDs being installed in universities

LOCAL Red Cross is installing automatic external defibrillators at universities to deal with emergencies.

A training program to teach people how to use the defibrillator was launched at Shanghai Jiao Tong University yesterday. Jiaotong has installed 85 AEDs on its campus, the first university with wide installation of AEDs in the nation.

AED can greatly improve the survival chances if used within four minutes on people suffering cardiac arrest.

Local education and health authority started to enhance emergency equipment distribution and training after several students died due to cardiac arrest — the latest being in Tongji University where a student died on August 29.

The Shanghai branch of Red Cross Society of China started a program of installing AED in local public places like Metro stations, airports, major tourism sites since September, last year.

So far, 372 machines have been installed.
