7 nations will join science festival in city

SHANGHAI Science Festival will run from May 20 featuring over 1,000 events over eight days to bring science and knowledge closer to the public.

The city’s science and technology commission said yesterday that from this year, the formerly biennial festival would be held every year.

Events this year include exhibitions, interactive workshops, concerts, lectures and opening tours in key laboratories of universities, scientific institutes as well as the city’s industrial parks.

A special exhibition on blue and white pottery, a kind of blue and white decoration widely used in Chinese porcelain, will be held at Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.

This exhibition will feature more than 50 blue and white pottery artifacts from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the 1940s to illustrate the origin, technique development, culture and ways of identifying the pottery. A master of blue and white pottery is also expected to show how to make porcelain artifacts.

Scientists and professionals from seven countries including the Czech Republic, Poland, the Netherlands and Singapore, will provide interactive experiments for local residents.

For example, Copernicus Science Centre from Poland will have a molecules demonstration that will describe molecular gastronomy via experiments, while The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research will provide lectures on topics including 3D printings and customized nutrients.

Lectures and tours in key laboratories of 104 universities and renowned scientific institutes will be of interest to teenage science fans in particular. Two Fortune Global 500 companies will also open their most advanced research and development centers to young students to display the latest technology in real application.

In addition to the existing 200 science promotion education centers that are free to the public, a further 50 institutions will provide free or discounted admissions for residents during the period.
