67-year-old given new life by stem cells op

SHANGHAI General Hospital successfully saved a 67-year-old acute leukemia patient by transplanting half-matched hematopoietic stem cells into him.

He was the oldest patient to receive such an operation in the city, the hospital announced yesterday.

Previous recipients of half-matched hematopoietic stem cells are usually younger than 60 due to the high failure rate among senior patients.

The man surnamed Wang was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in March last year in Beijing, and his condition developed into acute leukemia after chemotherapy.

A hematopoietic stem cell operation became his final hope as chemotherapy sessions failed to restore renal function.

Human leukocyte antigen matching found that hematopoietic stem cells of his siblings all failed to match his cells, while those of his only daughter only half-matched.

Wang and his daughter were rejected by many hospitals for the transplantation operation as an operation was considered too high risk.

But Shanghai General Hospital decided to meet the challenge. Wang Chun, director of the hematology department, accepted the patient and led his team to work out a six-day chemotherapy program to minimize potential harm to his organs before the operation.

Serious rejection did occur after the cells were injected into the patient’s body and he suffered from fever and oral cavity bleeding, but despite the setbacks, the operation succeeded and the patient was recently released from the hospital.
