4 people blacklisted by FDA for food scandal

THE Shanghai Food and Drug Administration yesterday blacklisted four people who were sentenced and fined by courts in food scandal.

Zhang Yubu was sentenced to six months in jail and fined 5,000 yuan (US$806.45) by the Jinshan District People’s Court after officers from Shanghai FDA found morphine in the soup served at Yubu Hotpot restaurant last November.

During the raid, FDA officers also found poppy shells in the storeroom of the eatery. Zhang used poppy shell in soups to attract customers.

In another case, Yang Lianyan, who ran an unlicensed eatery in Gutai Road in Baoshan District, was caught using unhygienic meat to make dumplings.

Yang bought the meat from Ma Dapan, a stall owner in Gucun wet market.

The court learnt that Ma knew that Yang used the meat in his dishes and made profits but sold him the meat.

The meat Ma sold were illegal and unfit for human consumption.

The Baoshan District People’s Court sentenced Yang to a year in prison and fined him 80,000 yuan. Ma was also sentenced to a year in jail and fined 50,000 yuan.

The blacklist also included Wang Hongbiao who was caught selling illegal pork without the quarantine inspection certificate at his shop in the Jiangyang wet market.

Wang had purchased 265 cases of pork meat weighing 5,287.61 kilogram even though he knew the meat were not inspected. During the search, officers found ractopamine, a banned chemical used in pigs, in 42 meat packets.

Wang was sentenced to three years and fined 50,000 yuan.

All of them have been blacklisted by Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, which effectively means they cannot run or be involved in food business for the next five years.
