22 food samples fail tests
TWENTY-TWO food samples out of 487 checked by the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration in May failed to meet national standards.
Inspectors discovered salmonella bacteria and crystal violet —a dye with antibacterial properties — in meat and aquatic produce.
Samples were taken from producers, wet markets, supermarkets and restaurants, with foodstuffs like grain products, edible oil, meat and meat products, eggs and aquatic products tested.
A total of 11 substances — also including heavy metals, pesticide residue and banned food additives — were discovered in those that failed.
These products have been removed from the shelves and those involved will face punishments, said the administration.
Crystal violet is banned in Shanghai, though not nationally, said officials.
