12 eateries shut under program
Since the start of the year, 12 local dining establishments have been ordered to temporarily close their doors and send their staff to hygiene and food safety training under a new point-based monitoring program, the city’s food and drug safety chief said yesterday.
Over 400 restaurants have also lost points so far under the scheme, Yan Zuqiang, director of the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, told a local radio.
The scheme, introduced in January, penalizes dining establishments that violate sanitation and food safety regulations by deducting points from their record. Those which lose 12 points — the maximum allotted — will be ordered to shut down until their managers and head chefs undergo a training course and pass an examination administered by Yan’s bureau. Rule-breakers may also be required to undergo renovations and upgrades before they can resume business. According to Yan, restaurants lose more points for more serious infractions.
Yan added that while authorities have had success tackling toxic cooking oil and foods tainted with pesticides, unhygienic conditions can still be found at some local restaurants.
