What the city can do for its foreigners

HOW to make Shanghai more foreigner friendly? Well, there is no shortage of ideas.
Suggestions put to the Shanghai Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference have come from foreign consular officials, scholars and representatives of sister cities, foreign-invested enterprises and commerce chambers.
They are aimed at making the city more friendly to foreigners in terms of public service and business environment.
Ana Candida Perez, head of the Consular Corp in Shanghai and Brazilian Consul-General in Shanghai, said the unification of work permits for foreigners was a positive step. “We hope additional measures may facilitate the temporary employment of foreign talent, especially young professionals and interns.”
The Consul-General suggested Shanghai should improve some public services. “Traffic signs, bus lines, trains and taxi hailing services should be made easier to use by international tourists, business people and foreign residents.”
Marcus Wassmuth, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Chapter of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, said Shanghai should lead a bolder reform in foreign investment administration to grant greater market access for European investors in China.
Shane Miguel Johnson, a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, suggested setting up centers in major universities to have close interaction between industries and universities to allow practical technologies to be transferred from universities to companies.
