US$60,000 raised at local charity event
A charity bazaar and auction in celebration of the 106th anniversary of International Women's Day raised some 387,000 yuan (US$59,633) for disabled children and orphans yesterday, local women's federation said.
The Consular Spouses Shanghai, Shanghai Children's Foundation and the federation co-hosted this event, with the theme of "Charity Begins at Home -- My Home is Your Home," at the Zendai Himalaya Center in the Pudong New Area. The money raised from the auction will be given to the Shanghai Children's Foundation.
Nearly 80 items from 18 countries, donated by consul-generals in Shanghai and local enterprises, were auctioned in this event, mostly artworks, jewelry and travel packages.
"To our guests here today we hope you will support us by bidding for an item or two, whatever kind of contribution you make will accelerate our goals of reaching out to the many woman and children in China whose lives we touch through our charity work. Working together, let us change lives for the better!" addressed by Busisiwe Thage, president of Consular Spouses Shanghai.
Many companies that participated in the charity bazaar told Shanghai Daily that they always contribute to charity and care for children in trouble. Some have set up their own children's fund to help the poor and children in needs.
