US to close visa section in October for 10 days

THE consular section of the US Consulate in Shanghai will be closed from October 9-18 as it upgrades its visa application system.

“The closures, which are not regular, have been planned for some time in order for us to offer better service to our applicants,” said Jewell Elizabeth Evans, the Consular section chief.

US State Department database has crashed several times in the past few years leading to delays in visas and passport applications around the world.

During the periods of closure, American citizens needing emergency services can call the American Citizen Services, while applicants requiring emergency visa services can schedule an appointment with the consular sections at the US Embassy in Beijing or at one of the US consulates in Guangzhou, Shenyang or Chengdu.

To deal with the increasing number of visa applications, the consular section has also increased the volume of usable indoor queuing space and expanded by more than 900 square meters. It now occupies the entire eighth floor of Westgate Mall on Nanjing Road W.

“About 2,500 to 3,000 applicants go through our new waiting facility every day since we first opened it for trial at the end of last month, and it turned out to be working well,” Evans said.

“This facility makes the visa application process more comfortable, more efficient and safer.”

The facility can hold around 600 people at the same time, and it takes approximately five to 20 minutes for applicants to move for the interview depending on low or peak seasons, and less than an hour to complete the entire process.
