50 expats receive Magnolia Award

FIFTY people from 19 countries were presented with the Magnolia Silver Award yesterday in recognition of their contribution to the city’s development.

Among the recipients were Frenchman Pascal Yves Joseph Metivier, Research and Innovation director of Belgian chemical company Solvay (China) Co.

“Shanghai’s robust growth has benefited from many international friends’ wisdom and hard work, and your contribution and friendship will always be remembered by people of Shanghai,” Zhang Xiaosong, director-general of the city’s foreign affairs office, said when he presented the awards.

“Next year is critical as we will begin the 13th five-year plan. We sincerely hope that everyone here will support us and work with us to build Shanghai a more beautiful city.”

“I want to thank Shanghai City for awarding us this great recognition and honor,” Metivier said on behalf of all recipients.

“In 2007, I had the opportunity to come and work in this amazing city,” he added.

“During these eight years in Shanghai, I have seen major evolution in the city, changes so fast that we can say they correspond to changes that would have taken 30 to 50 years in other cities abroad.”

“This year, Shanghai has set a strategy of becoming an international landmark for innovation and technology and we’re excited about this,” Metivier added.

More than 1,000 people have received the Magnolia Silver Awards, which is named after Shanghai’s official flower, since it was inaugurated by the city government in 1989.
