Polluters fined US$2.65m, 44 firms closed

LOCAL authorities collected 16.5 million yuan (US$2.65 million) worth of fines in the final three months of last year from companies that breached environmental regulations.
A total of 44 firms were closed down or had their operations suspended in the period, while a further 210 were fined or given warnings, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said yesterday.
The worst offender was Shanghai Xingyue Environmental Protection Co, which was fined 2.4 million yuan for the illegal dumping of solid waste in the Zhuanqiao area of Minhang District.
The figures were published in the bureau’s quarterly “blacklist” of corporate offenders. As well as being fined for environmental misdemeanors, companies on the list are given “points” on their records, which over time can affect their ability to secure funding from banks and prevent them accessing preferential government policies.
In its latest move to crack down on polluters, the city government said from now on it will hold company managers and executives personally responsible for any environmental violations committed by the organizations they run.
A daily fine system for firms that pollute the air, soil or waterways with illegal discharges and emissions was recently introduced by the government.
The new rule places the blame for such misdemeanors firmly on the shoulders of the individuals that approve or turn a blind eye to such acts.
