Pledge to cut industrial pollution

JINSHAN District’s industrial zone plans to substantially reduce its production of pollutants and incorporate more emvironmentally friendly companies.
“The zone plans to cut its total pollutant discharge by 30 percent by the end of next year,” said Liu Xinyu, general manager of Jinshan No. 2 Industrial Zone Management Company. “In the future, we will only introduce new companies involved in the service industry and modern non-chemical manufacturing.”
Southwest Shanghai’s Jinshan No. 2 Industrial Zone, located in Jinshanwei Town, near the Hangzhou Bay, is home to a group of heavy polluting chemical enterprises.
Under the city government’s environmental improvement plan for the area, eight out of the 28 heavy polluting enterprises that are scheduled to be shut down this year have already suspended operations, and the rest will gradually follow. Another 11 enterprises have been ordered to undergo renovations to improve their pollution-reduction capabilities within the year. Three of them have already met the requirements, and the other eight have submitted plans.
Among them is Shanghai Qunli Chemical Company, a joint venture involved in agricultural chemical research and development.
Under the supervision of the local environment authority, the company has ceased production over the past year of three chemical products that emitted strong odors.
The company also invested 5 million yuan earlier this year to install a set of waste gas-handling facilities. The company is also equipped with detectors that can measure the density of volatile organic compounds.
The zone will implement a number of environmental improvement measures this year including a waterway cleaning project.
