Moderate air pollution as Lantern Festival begins

NO wind will mean slight to moderate air pollution for Shanghai from tonight, when the Lantern Festival takes place.

The Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said that fireworks, which are allowed beyond the Outer Ring Road area, could worsen the air pollution tonight.

The center forecast the city’s air quality index would rise to 115, or slightly polluted, this evening. PM2.5, tiny particles that are hazardous to health, will be the major pollutant. The index is expected to climb to 145 tomorrow due to poor dispersal conditions.

The whole Yangtze River Delta region will be affected by this round of pollution, but coastal cities are expected to enjoy cleaner air from Tuesday with the arrival of an east wind.

By Wednesday, Shanghai’s air quality will meet environmental standards, the center said.
