Heavy pollution today before cold front arrives

HEAVY smog is forecast for today as a stream of pollutants are carried from the north to the city, forecasters said yesterday.

Part of the city will also see a fog this morning due to high humidity.

According to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, Shanghai’s air quality is expected to be marked as heavily polluted most of today, with the city air quality index ranging between 201 and 240.

The main pollutant is likely to be tiny PM2.5 particles that are especially harmful.

Today’s temperatures are forecast to range from 4 to 11 degrees Celsius, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The arrival of a weak cold front tomorrow will improve the air quality and reduce temperatures.

But the colder weather will only last a day and the mercury will return to the teens on Sunday.

While the high will barely reach 7 degrees tomorrow, Sunday will see a high of 11 degrees, while on Monday and Tuesday it will reach 13 degrees.

Sunny skies with some cloud are expected Sunday and Monday, after which it is forecast to be cloudy through Tuesday.
