Fishermen waiting to net piety offerings

FISH that Buddhists are buying and releasing into the Huangpu River are being caught by fishermen shortly afterward.

In China, the release of animals — fang sheng in Chinese — is an important way of demonstrating Buddhist piety.

Xinmin Evening News reported that fish are being released along the Dongchang Binjiang green area in the Pudong New Area.

Trucks from neighboring provinces line the avenue with fish in plastic crates for sale.

A box of carp is priced at 300 yuan (US$48), while a box of snakehead cost 500 yuan, it reported.

A reporter saw two middle-aged women spend 1,000 yuan buying fish which were then released into the river.

However, their time in the Huangpu looked likely to be short as waiting down river were groups of fishermen perched on the flood defense wall with rods and nets, the report said.

Meanwhile, environmental experts have criticized the practice of releasing the fish, saying it could affect the ecosystem of the river.

They said the snakehead is an invasive species that threatens other wildlife, while tropical snails released into the waterway can spread disease.

Other species sold for release include loach, soft-shelled turtles, eels and mussels.

The Pudong New Area government said releasing fish was not a serious problem.
