Campaign under way to refresh rivers in Jinshan

OFFICIALS in Jinshan District are claiming success after an environmental campaign helped to improve water quality in two rivers that flow through the Tinglin Industrial Zone.

The Wangjiajing and Zhaoxianjing rivers had been a source of annoyance to local people for many years due to their noxious odor and murky waters.

Following an investigation, officials identified a number of companies that were dumping waste into the rivers and pumping foul-smelling emissions into the air.

The businesses were promptly ordered to close down pending upgrades to their waste-handling systems, said Xu Jianhua, vice manager of Tinglin Development Co, which managed the project.

The two rivers were also dredged to remove years of sediment from their beds, and clean water was pumped into them, he said.

Over the coming years, all 12 rivers in the industrial zone will be subjected to a similar cleanup, he said.

A new drainage system is also being built and should be completed in 2017, he said.

To encourage public participation in the works, the Jinshan government set up a hotline for people to provide information about polluters. Callers can receive rewards of up to 500 yuan (US$80).
