Anti-pollution measures improve city’s air quality
THANKS to a raft of anti-pollution measures, Shanghai experienced a slight improvement in its air quality during the first half of the year, said officials.
In the first six months, the average density of tiny particle PM2.5, the city’s main air pollutant, was 54 micrograms per cubic meter — a 3.6 percent decrease over the same period of last year.
The national limit over a one-year period is 35, but the World Health Organization’s recommended standard is 10.
The Shanghai government aims to lower the yearly average density of PM2.5 to 42 micrograms per cubic meter by the end of 2020.
Over 940 city- or district-level environmental improvement projects were planned for 2015 to 2017, including the use of cleaner oil for ships, as well as the control of volatile organic compounds discharged from local factories.
According to the environmental protection bureau, Shanghai citizens enjoyed 130 days of good or excellent air quality in the first half of the year, with the air quality index reported to be no higher than 100.
The average density of other air pollutants, such as PM10, SO2 and NO2, also dropped significantly — 6.8 percent, 5.9 percent and 4.2 percent respectively compared to the same period of last year.
