Air purifiers fail to clean up

SOME vehicle air purifiers sold on leading online shopping sites — including jd.com and Amazon — have much poorer purifying efficiency than claimed, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said yesterday.

The watchdog tested the purifying efficiency for formaldehyde, PM2.5 and methylbenzene in 31 air purifiers bought online.

Prices ranged from 188 yuan (US$30) to 1,999 yuan, said officials.

Despite all claiming to have formaldehyde purifying efficiency, officials found that their performances were unsatisfactory.

Among the machines, 20 had a purifying efficiency of formaldehyde of lower than 20 percent, 13 were lower than 10 percent efficient, while 10 had an efficiency level lower than 5 percent.

Those with the lowest rating included a purifier made by Shenzhen Green Welcome Co Ltd and a Sharp vehicle air purifier, said officials.
