Air pollution easing after alarm
SHANGHAI’S latest round of air pollution will ease today after yesterday’s blue alarm, the environment authority said.
A blue alert is issued when the air quality index is expected to be between 2001 and 300.
Yesterday hit a peak of 227 — or heavily polluted — at 10am. Tiny particle PM2.5 was the major pollutant.
Yangpu District and the Pudong New Area reported a PM2.5 density of 200 micrograms per cubic meter, eight times the World Health Organization’s standard of 25.
According to Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, westerly winds brought pollutants from neighboring provinces into the city since Sunday evening and humidity stopped the pollution dispersing.
Under a blue alarm, potential sources of pollution, including some industrial operations and construction sites, were closed down and schools canceled outdoor activities.
The maximum temperature today is expected to be 11 degrees Celsius. Tomorrow should be a high of 13 and a low of five.
The weather should be sunny until Thursday. Friday and Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a low of about 7 degrees and a high about 12 degrees.
