259 firms guilty of breaking green rules

A total of 259 local companies were blacklisted in the first three months of the year for violating environmental protection regulations.

All of them will be punished and face strict supervision of their business activities, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said yesterday.

The firms were charged with violating rules on air and water pollution, and the dumping of solid waste, the bureau said. Of the total, 219 were told to rectify their behavior, 84 of which have since done so, 13 were ordered to close, and the rest were either forced to cease production, were relocated or were involved in legal action, it said.

The list will be forwarded to the banking and securities regulators, which could affect the companies’ chances of securing loans, floating on the stock market or accessing preferential government policies, the bureau said. In the final quarter of last year, 254 blacklisted firms were fined a total of 16.5 million yuan (US$2.6 million).
