Youngsters spend most on holiday

SHANGHAI tourists spent an average of 14,970 yuan (US$2,300) during their foreign holidays last year, a survey claimed yesterday.

The poll of 1,850 travelers was conducted by the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission.

People aged 26 to 40 were the biggest spenders, with a mean outlay of 19,677 yuan, the survey said.

Those aged 65 and over were the most parsimonious, with an average spend of less than 7,000 yuan per person.

The most popular items to buy during a foreign excursion were cosmetics, followed by clothes, food, health products and watches, the survey said.

Lower prices, better quality and more choices were the main reasons given by respondents for pending money on holiday gifts, it said.

Hong Kong, the United States and Japan were the top three shopping destinations for tourists last year, according to data collected from travel agents.

The survey was released ahead of the upcoming Spring Festival, which is a popular time for travel.
