Theater to put poems on display

SHANGHAI Grand Theater has launched a public selection of the English translated version of “The Gold-Woven Melody,” a famous ci (poetic form) of ancient China.

The sentimental poems were written by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) scholar Gu Zhenguan as letters to his friend who had been wrongly imprisoned for decades.

Good translated versions of the Chinese poems will be selected and displayed this month when an original Peking Opera production based on the poems and the stories is presented at the theater.

“The Gold-Woven Melody” will be staged on July 17 and 18 with both Chinese and English subtitles.

The play is directed by Max Lee from Taiwan’s Guoguang Opera Co. Lee is famous for his exploration of the new aesthetics of Peking Opera in music, staging and performing style.
