Symphony orchestra seeks memorabilia

THE Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is appealing to the public for contributions to its 135-year anniversary celebrations later this year.

To mark the opening of its new home on Fuxing Road M., the orchestra plans to stage an exhibition of memorabilia and “memories,” most of which it hopes will come from music lovers and amateur historians.

The organizers of the event said they welcome all kinds of materials and objects related to the orchestra, as well as items that help to illustrate the history of Chinese music. These might include photos, books, newspaper cuttings, letters, manuscripts, signed CDs, musical instruments, program lists and concert tickets, they said.

All contributions should be made before June 15, the organizers said. Once sorted, the best items will be given pride of place in the gallery of the new concert hall, which is scheduled to open to the public in September.

As well as the physical displays, the organizers are also appealing to anyone who can help document the history of the orchestra either from their own memories and experiences or through research.
