Stuttgart Ballet to perform “Romeo and Juliet” today at Shanghai Grand Theater
SHANGHAI audiences will witness another top version of “Romeo and Juliet” today by Stuttgart Ballet at Shanghai Grand Theater, shortly after the Mariinsky hit the stage with the same story days ago.
“It is very unusual,” said Reid Anderson, Artistic Director of the Stuttgart Ballet. Though the Stuttgart had been in Shakespeare festivals where different top ballet companies presenting different works of Shakespeare, they had never shared the same stage for the same story within days.
“I don't feel any pressure. Our companies are so very different. I don’t see it as a rivalry between two companies, but rather an interesting occasion for ballet lovers to appreciate the two versions by two top companies on the same story,” said Anderson.
The “Romeo and Juliet” that the Stuttgart will present on October 28-30 is a version created by John Cranko in 1961, who founded the Stuttgart Ballet. Amazed by the Lavrovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet” based on Prokofiev’s music in 1940s, Cranko developed his own version with the same music and his own understanding of the story and ballet language.
“Cranko is very gifted in ballet for his talent in telling a story. He builds drama through choreography. Even without knowing the story in advance, the audiences will understand what is going on easily,” said Anderson.
And his creation of “Romeo and Juliet”, which is the most famous Romeo and Juliet in the west shaped Stuttgart ballet’s miracle success.
“Stuttgart is famous for doing dramatic ballet, like Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew and Onegin,” said Anderson. “The dancers are known for being real people living a real story on stage. That makes this company’s characteristic from the very beginning.”
