Shanghai, London to make music

THE Shanghai Conservatory of Music and London’s Royal College of Music said yesterday they would establish a joint institute to give local students access to some of the world’s top music education.

It will be the first such joint venture for the RCM since its birth in 1882 and is part of the SCM’s quest to become a world leader.

SCM president Lin Zaiyong and his RCM counterpart, Colin Lawson, signed the agreement at a ceremony yesterday. A Program of Talent Education will be set up at the new institute, recruiting students from senior high school and above globally, as one of the first steps.

Top teachers from the RCM will teach in the program and also work as part-time faculty at the Shanghai Conservatory, where they will instruct undergraduates and post-graduates.

They will also take part in other academic programs, including master classes and lectures.

And programs such as summer camps and arts festivals will bring the teachers and students of both organizations together for artistic and academic exchanges.

There will also be short-term exchanges for students between the two academies and credits will apply in both institutions.

The SCM and the RCM will also develop advanced programs and issue joint certificates.

The collaboration is part of the Shanghai Conservatory’s pursuit of international exchanges and cooperation and its search for innovative ways to cultivate talent as part of its goal to become a first-class international music academy.

“On one hand, we hope that the collaboration will help bring in advanced educational ideas and resources, which can help accelerate our systemic reforms and construction of first class disciplines,” said Lin.

“On the other hand, we also hope that our joint operations with leading academies in the world will expand our recognition and influence around the world.” The institute will be set up in the historic Blackstone Apartments on Fuxing Road M.
