Scallion pancake on sale again

A popular local scallion pancake store — closed down in recent weeks for the lack of a license — reopened yesterday, attracting big crowds.
The first customer to have a bite of the snack had waited two hours for the privilege.
The legendary and now newly licensed Ada Scallion Pancake has moved to Yongjia Road near Ruijin Road No. 2 in Huangpu District. It was reopened under the sponsorship of a local online food delivery firm. Ele.me helped the owner Wu Gencun find the new location and set up a licensed store. The firm will cover the rent of the store.
Before he was closed down last month, Wu had been operating from unlicensed premises — the backyard of his home.
Wu had been told to suspend operations by the market supervision and management bureau of Huangpu District.
The pancake quota at his new premises will remain at 300 a day, and there will be no change to the taste of the product that has such a devoted following.
Wu has made his renowned pancake for the past three decades and he has attracted many expatriate customers as well as foreign tourists after the BBC interviewed him for a documentary “Taste of Shanghai.”
The suspension sparked widespread debate on the Internet with many people imploring Wu to reopen, though others supported the government’s efforts to shut down an illegal catering business.
