Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu appointed jury president of Golden Goblet Awards

OFFICIALS of the organizing committee of the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival announced that well-known Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu will be the jury president for the festival's Golden Goblet Awards.

Mungiu, 49, made his directorial debut film, "Occident/West" in 2002. In 2007, his second feature, "4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days," was awarded the Palme d’Or in Cannes. The film later received several awards as best film of the year from various international associations of film critics. It also won the European Film Academy awards for best film and best director.

Mungiu returned to Cannes in 2009 as a writer-producer-co-director with the collective episodic film "Tales from the Golden Age" and as a writer-director in 2012 with "Beyond the Hills" – both awarded for Best Screenplay and Best actresses. Last year his recent film "Graduation" was awarded for Best Director in Cannes International Film Festival.

Mungiu is adept at telling real-life stories. He said that he feels honored to chair the jury panel of the film festival in Shanghai because he is always respectful to Asian movies. The film festival will also offer him an opportunity to talk about cinematic arts and life.

The 20th Shanghai International Film Festival will be held from June 17 to 26.
