Record attendance at ChinaJoy

MORE than 273,000 people visited the ChinaJoy event in Shanghai which ended yesterday — a record attendance in the 12-year history of the country’s biggest gaming show, said organizers.

This was achieved despite scorching weather that might have dissuaded some people from attending and new restrictions to ensure that models at the event covered up more.

Yesterday alone, ChinaJoy — or the China Digital Entertainment Expo and Conference — attracted 43,827 visitors

Highlights of the event include e-sports, virtual reality gadgets and mobile games, leaving many attendees eager for more.

“I will definitely buy it when it’s available in China,” said “Mio,” an IT website editor, as he waited an hour for a demonstration of Sony’s VR system Morpheus.

The headset-sized Morpheus, which was being presented in the Chinese mainland for the first time, offers virtual concerts, virtual scuba diving and even virtual girlfriends.

It’s expected to debut in the domestic market in the first half of next year.

Visitors came to the ChinaJoy show for games and technology rather than to see sexy girls, said organizers and industry officials. Model agencies whose employees were deemed scantily clad faced fines of up to 10,000 yuan (US$1,600), said officials.
