Permanent home found for history museum

THE city’s most treasured historical artefacts will be moving to a new home.

The Shanghai History Museum, which currently has no permanent site, will be taking up residence at the former address of the Shanghai Art Museum on Nanjing Road W, the Shanghai Cultural Heritage Administration said yesterday.

Renovation work on the building, which originally housed a horse-racing club when it was built in 1933, will start this year, and the new site is expected to be open to the public sometime next year.

Part of the museum’s collection can currently be seen at an exhibition hall in the Oriental Pearl Tower in Pudong’s Lujiazui area, while other exhibits can be seen in various museums across the city.

The museum also holds temporary exhibitions at venues such as the Shanghai Library.

The history museum was initially set up in 1983 as the Shanghai History and Construction Museum. It rented an exhibition hall at a local agricultural exhibition and officially opened to the public in 1984.

The museum was moved to a new site on Hongqiao Road in 1991 and displayed over 1,500 collections through March 1999. It then moved part of its inventory to the Oriental Pearl Tower in 2001.

The former Shanghai Art Museum boasts 12 halls with an exhibition area of over 6,000 square meters. Most of its collection has been moved to the China Art Museum (the former China Pavilion at the World Expo 2010) in Pudong.

The Shanghai History Museum has about 110,000 pieces in its collection, which focuses mainly on the city’s history spanning from the opening of the port in 1843 to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

The collection includes calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, handicrafts and publications.
