New luxury cruise liner Majestic Princess chooses city as home port

SHANGHAI will become the home port of a new luxury cruise liner, which will set sail for its maiden voyage from the city next year.

The 143,700-ton Majestic Princess of the UK cruise vocation company Carnival will begin its first cruise in July, 2017, carrying some 3,500 guests to destinations in Japan and Korea, the company announced yesterday.

The ship is under construction in Italy by the shipbuilder Fincantieri.

The cruise liner will have a total of 1,780 rooms, over 80 percent of which will have balconies. It will be equipped with 20 restaurants and pubs, including a Chinese restaurant named Harmony to serve classic Cantonese dishes.

The ship will present two Las Vegas-style production shows, “Fiera” and “Fantastic Journey” which have been popular among international audiences across the Princess fleet. It also features China’s largest cruise ship movie screen as well as a water light show. Passengers can also experience a glass floor walkway above the sea.

The Carnival has made Shanghai the homeport of its 115,000-ton Sapphire Princess, which set sail on its maiden voyage from Wusongkou Port in Baoshan District in 2014.

The city is now the world’s eighth largest cruise liner port, hosting more than 400 voyages and 1.6 million passengers last year, according to the city’s transport commission.
