New Kunqu Opera version of 'A Dream of Red Mansions' to debut next month

SHANGHAI'S Kunqu Opera Troupe will present a newly adapted version of Kunqu Opera classic "A Dream of Red Mansions" on August 3 and 4 at the concert hall of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

The literary classic "A Dream of Red Mansions" has been adapted into many theater productions in the past, but this new version will focus on the relationship between Xue Baochai and Jia Baoyu. The play will portray the emotions and tragic life of Xue from a modern perspective.

The play will star award-winning actress Shen Yili and talented young performer Hu Weilu. Its script was written by the young, versatile scriptwriter Luo Qian, who will add some new elements to the original story.

Oscar-winning art director and designer Timmy Yip will also join the team and will design costumes and stage imagery for the production.

According to Gu Haohao, director of the troupe, it is the first time a traditional Chinese theater production will be staged at a Western-style concert hall. The elegant art form is expected to boast a modern flavor with stunning visual effects.
