National recognition for city martial arts

SHANGHAI martial arts styles have been included in the latest batch of China’s intangible cultural heritages.

The city government announced yesterday that Chin Woo, based in Hongkou District, and Mian Quan, from Yangpu District, were among 153 new national level heritages that will get government funds to be protected.

Chin Woo was invented by Huo Yuanjia (1868-1910). He was hailed as a Chinese hero after defeating foreign fighters in kung fu bouts staged by the Chin Woo Athletic Association in Hongkou in 1909.

In August, 400 overseas martial arts enthusiasts took China’s national martial arts gradings at the opening of the Chin Woo Gymnasium and Chin Woo Park in Hongkou.

Mian Quan — “soft boxing” — based in Yangpu District was also selected for the national intangible cultural heritages.

Related to tai chi, it was developed in Shanghai by Meng Guangyin during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) for guards of ships’ cargo.
