Museums, galleries in one place

BUILDING will start on Shanghai’s first “museum complex” of dozens of museums and art galleries in Jiading District by the end of the year, officials said yesterday.

The Haishang Cultural Museum Complex, to cover 67,000 square meters, will be finished by about 2020 and become a new cultural landmark in the area on the city’s outskirts, said Yao Qiang, deputy director of the district bureau of culture, radio, film and TV.

The district government has been developing a batch of cultural venues in recent years as most major museums and theaters are downtown region, requiring an inconvenient commute for residents.

The recent developments include the Han Tianheng Art Museum, Shanghai Poly Grand Theater and the Jiading Library.

The museum complex in the south of Jiading Old Town will be close to the Jiading Exit of the S5 Hujia Highway.

Designed by Portuguese architect Carlos Castanheira, the complex will have a minimalist style and will include various museums and galleries in three storys, along with cafes, teahouses, a calligraphy training room and a park.

The complex will be divided into more than 30 individual exhibition rooms, ranging from 500-3,000 square meters, with space for workshops and seminars.

“It will make it possible for visitors to see dozens of various collections from world-class collectors and thousands of artworks by renowned artists through a single visit,” Yao said.
