Museum reopens at new site

AFTER three years of construction work, the Liu Haisu Art Museum reopened to the public at its new location on Yan’an Road W. yesterday.
Named after Liu Haisu (1896-1994), a major figure in China’s New Art Movement, the museum first opened in 1995 on Hongqiao Road.
The new six-hall venue covers 12,000 square meters.
“We hope visitors can gain a better understanding of Liu Haisu’s life and artistic career, and the achievements of this great master through this exhibition,” said museum director Zhu Gang.
The opening exhibition features oil and ink wash paintings by Liu, his collection of antique paintings, as well as books and videos about him.
The artworks were selected from 911 donated to the museum by Liu and his family in the twilight years of his life.
A prominent painter and noted art educator, Liu played a vital role in the Chinese art world for nearly seven decades.
He traveled extensively in China and abroad. When he was in Europe, he rubbed shoulders with some of the world’s most prominent early 20th-century artists, including Picasso, whom he met in Paris in 1929.
Liu’s own works were remarkable for their blending of traditional Chinese painting techniques with those of European artistic movements, including Impressionism and its associated schools.
According to Zhu, the new museum will also focus on young artists. A series of exhibitions featuring their work is planned.
