Longhua Temple Fair starts tomorrow in Xuhui

THE historic Longhua Temple Fair in Xuhui District featuring a raft of folk culture activities will run from tomorrow to April 2.

Longhua Chuhui, a 400-year-old folk festival focused on praying for good fortune, is a highlight of the temple fair. Performers dressed in traditional festival costumes will take part in a parade of auspicious, mythological figures and fairies in a festive atmosphere.

Some performers will walk on stilts and some will perform traditional dances featuring horse elements.

Rituals of blessing with people wearing traditional Han costumes will be performed, and a display of qipao, or cheongsam — the form-fitting dresses made famous in Shanghai — will also be staged.

Craftsmen will show off some old handicrafts and jobs, like sharpening scissors, pulling rickshaws, selling ligaotang (pear candy) and polishing shoes, which evoke some common scenes from old times in Shanghai.

In previous times, it was said Chinese people had 360 walks of life or jobs. Some of them have been passed down, but some have been eliminated over time.

Visitors are also invited to taste delicacies and play games at the fair.

Attending the Longhua Temple Fair and enjoying peach blossoms in the Longhua area formed an important tradition of Shanghainese in the past.
