‘Lion King’ in Mandarin at Disney resort

BROADWAY classic “The Lion King” will be performed for the first time in Mandarin at Shanghai Disney Resort, it was announced yesterday.

Cast auditions are scheduled to start this summer in China, with a focus on attracting and developing local talent, the resort said.

The Julie Taymor’s production seen on Broadway and in productions around the world will be staged in the Walt Disney Grand Theatre.

The 1,200-seat Broadway-style theater will be located at Shanghai Disney Resort’s retail, dining and entertainment area, currently under construction adjacent to the Shanghai Disneyland theme park.

“It is an excellent example of how the resort is tailoring the best of Disney with local talent to create world-class entertainment specifically for the people of China,” said Mike Crawford, general manager of the resort.

The Lion King remains the highest-grossing Broadway show in New York history, as well as one of the most popular stage musicals in the world.

Since its Broadway premiere in 1997, more than 70 million people around the world have seen the 22 global productions.

Shanghai Disney Resort’s retail, dining and entertainment area will offer opportunities to enjoy Chinese and international dining, shopping and entertainment, says Disney.

The Disney resort is expected to open to the public by late 2015.
