Japan trips edited due to volcano risk
TRAVEL agencies in Shanghai said they have adjusted the itineraries of their Japan tours after local authorities raised a volcano warning regarding Mount Hakone.
The Japan Meteorological Agency on Thursday upped its alert for Owakudani Park in the town of Hakone to level 3, which means people are not allowed to enter, the Japan National Tourism Organization said on its website.
There is now a 1-kilometer restriction zone around the volcano and local people have been ordered to evacuate their homes, the agency said.
Shanghai Jinjiang Travel and China Youth Travel Service Shanghai both said they have taken Owakudani off their tours to the area.
The China National Tourism Administration advised people planning to travel to Japan to take heed of any warnings issued.
Due to the recent MERS crisis in South Korea and Japan’s relaxed visa-free policy, the island nation has become one of the most popular overseas destinations for Shanghai tourists this summer, local travel agents said.
