Japan top choice for local tourists
JAPAN is the most popular destination for people looking to spend the Dragon Boat Festival holiday overseas, a travel agent said yesterday.
“Many tourists who were planning to go to South Korea changed their minds because of the MERS outbreak,” online tour operator Tongcheng said in a statement.
“Many people opted for Japan because of its relaxed visa policy and favorable exchange rate,” the company said. Macau and Thailand are also popular choices, the company added.
Online travel website Ctrip said it has seen a sharp increase in the number of schoolchildren and students going on holiday now that the exams are over.
The most popular destinations are in Southeast Asia, with numbers up about 30 percent on last year, it said.
About a third of the growth is due to an increase in travelers aged between 19 and 25, the company said.
For people planning to stay in Shanghai for the holiday, a host of special events will be staged across the city.
At Mingzhuhu Park in Chongming County visitors can look forward to a dragon boat race and dragon dance performance, while at Fengjing Water Town in Jinshan District day-trippers can take part in a competition to make zongzi — traditional treats of sticky rice wrapped in reed or bamboo leaves — or put their drinking skills to the test in a wine tasting event.
At the Shanghai Botanical Garden, visitors can listen to a selection of lectures on the culture and tradition of the festival, while at Shanghai Chocolate Happyland the main event will be zongzi-making for children.
Weather forecasters, however, said that many events might end up being washed out.
“The plum rain belt is still in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and that means there will be lots more showers,” said Kong Chunyan, a chief service officer at the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
However, the rains are not expected to arrive until tomorrow, and today should be mostly dry, with the mercury ranging from 21 to 29 degrees Celsius.
Heavy rains will continue through most of the early part of next week — with thunder and lightning forecast for Monday — though there will be some respite on Tuesday and Wednesday, the bureau said.
