THE city’s Jade Buddha Temple today announced to cooperate with five local universities to launch a series of research projects on China’s Buddhism cultural heritages.

Fudan, Jiao Tong, Tongji universities as well as East China Normal University and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music signed an agreement today to organize research teams on five projects. They include studies on China’s ancient temples, the traditions of setting animals free and the environment as well as Buddhism arts and music.

“Our researches will not only focus on the Buddhism philosophy but also the Buddhism related cultural heritages, which involved many of the nation’s traditional cultures,” said Zhao Dongming, a professor with the Center on Religion and Society with the East China Normal University.

Zhao said the temple has collected many ancient books of Sutra which are worth studying.

Liu Hong, a professor with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music said the conservatory has been long cooperating with the temple on researches on the Buddhism music.

The temple sent 10 senior monks to study singing in the conservatory for three years. They will lead the monk chorus of the temple to perform for visitors from both home and abroad.

Meanwhile, the temple yesterday announced to donate 200,000 yuan a year in scholarship to the School of Philosophy of Fudan University.

The temple also launched a weekly cultural week today to hold free lectures about the philosophy of life to local residents.
