Homes of writer, cartoonist to reopen as museums

A “Hall of Letters” will be the main attraction at the former home of playwright Ke Ling when it reopens to the public as a museum next month, a local official said yesterday.

The author of such works as “The Night Inn” and “Corrosion” lived in the property at 147 Fuxing Road W. in Xuhui District from 1959 until his death in 2000, said Song Haojie, who works for the Hunan Road Subdistrict government and is in charge of the renovation of famous homes in the area.

The letters hall will feature about 200 pieces of correspondence written by Ke to his friends around China, many of them celebrities in their own right, Song said.

The letters were among 700 items donated to the museum by Ke’s family and other people who knew him, he told Shanghai Daily.

The renovation of the property is almost complete and the new-look building is set to reopen on February 5, he said.

On the same day, the house in which cartoonist Zhang Leping lived for more than 40 years will also open as a museum, Song said.

Zhang is best known for creating, in 1935, the much-loved character of San Mao, who went on to become the star of one of the world’s longest-running cartoon strips.

The first floor of the two-story house at 3 Wuyuan Road has been transformed into an exhibition area, while the upper rooms have been renovated so that visitors can see how Zhang lived between 1950 and 1992, Song said.

The display floor will feature more than 200 items belonging to Zhang, as well as 52 caricature portraits of the artist created and donated by his cartoonist friends.

Both museums will be free to enter, Song said.
