Film festival receives record number of entries

THE 18th Shanghai International Film Festival has received a record 2,096 entries from 108 countries and regions around the world, its organizing committee said yesterday.

Fu Wenxia, an official with the festival’s organizing committee, said the most outstanding films have been chosen to compete for the Golden Goblet Award and the Asian New Talent Award.

Films nominated for the Golden Goblet Award include “Sunstroke,” a new production from famed Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov, well-known South Korean filmmaker Kang Je-kyu’s “Salut D’amour” and Taiwan director Wang Tung’s “Where the Wind Settles.”

During the festival, which will be held from June 13 to 21, more than 1,200 film screenings will be presented at 45 local cinemas including Shanghai Film Art Center and Wanda International Cinemas. Ticket sales will begin about one week ahead of the festival.

Festivals films include the acclaimed “Birdman,” “The Theory of Everything” and “Two Days, One Night.”

This year marks the inaugural Jackie Chan Action Movie Week series while the festival will also pay tribute to celebrated artists such as French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, Japanese actor Ken Takakura and Chinese American actress Anna May Wong.

The opening ceremony on June 13 will feature around 400 stars strutting down the red carpet including Gong Li, Jackie Chan and Aaron Kwok.

The festival also includes forums, master classes and a chance for writers to pitch screenplays. Outdoor film screenings will also be held.
