Festive attractions

A HOST of activities will be staged citywide to celebrate Christmas and New Year, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said yesterday. Christmas markets have opened in the Xuhui Binjiang area, Expo Avenue and Cool Docks on Waima Road, all featuring delicacies, crafts, Christmas trees and of course, Santa Claus himself.

Traditional bell-ringing ceremonies will be staged on New Year’s Eve at temples including Longhua, Baohua, Jing’an, Donglin, Zhenru and the Jade Buddha. It is a tradition to ring the bell 108 times to start the new year — which is said to absolve sin and bring good luck. Meanwhile, lantern shows at the Yuyuan Garden, Guyi Park and Fengjing Water Town will be held in February to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Other winter attractions recommended by the administration include bird watching in Chongming Dongtan and Shanghai Botanic Garden.
