City’s music festival looks to provinces

THE 34th Shanghai Spring International Music Festival will bring 39 performances and star acts from home and abroad to Shanghai.

Running from April 28 to May 18, the festival’s performers include Chinese artists such as composer Tan Dun and baritone Liao Changyong, overseas artists like composer Krzysztof Penderecki from Poland, Britain’s King’s Singers choir, and The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center from the United States.

The festival this year will highlight music legacies in Southwest China, according to You Cun, an official with the Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, one of the hosts.

Popular traditional music in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces as well as Chongqing, will be staged.

“It will be our first trial for such a presentation at the festival,” said You. “If received well, the program may be expanded to more regions with characteristic music legacies in the following years.”
