Chilling out at zoo and park

WITH temperatures set to hit 35 degrees Celsius this weekend, the city zoo and wildlife park are taking steps to ensure their residents stay cool.
Animals at the Shanghai Zoo are being given more cooling drinks, while thirst-quenching fruit and vegetables are being added to diets.
In aviaries, sprayers kick in when temperatures reach 30 degrees, with nets draped over to provide shade for the birds, said Pan Xiuwen, a zoo official.
Meanwhile, the Shanghai Wildlife Park said it has been spraying water and scattering ice in the area where its golden snub-nosed monkeys live.
During the hot weather, lions and tiger cubs are housed in air conditioned quarters and given cold baths by keepers as a special treat, the park said.
Some animals have their own ways of fending off the heat. Ostriches flap their wings to create a cooling breeze, while Siberian tigers and bears like to keep cool in their pools.
The city yesterday entered sanfu — the period traditionally seen as the hottest of the year.
Today is forecasted to be cloudy though dry, with the top temperature 34 degrees, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
The high will climb 1 degree tomorrow, with dry weather again forecast. Monday will be cloudy to sunny, and again around 35 degrees.
